Ubr asked:

Say I wanted to fly to some distant foreign Country, are there any air restrictions that would prevent me from leaving the USA or passing through another countries territory?

You should be able to fly just about anywhere (maybe not Cuba, tho).

I know several folks who have flown to Bahamas, etc. — even the Cayman Islands –

Yes, you have to obtain landing/overflight, and customs arragnements for any country that you tend to overfly or land at. Some of these countries will prohibit you, others will take some time to arrange these permits, usually around 5 business days. Some, a matter of a few hours, such as canada, who with a CANPASS , can land in the country in 2 hours.
Another consideration is the aircraft, some countries have restrictions on the type of aircraft that can be operated in their country, due to noise and safety restrictions.
You will also have to have a passport, and arrange for inbound passenger customs screening at an aiport of entry, not any airport.
Also the country that you are a citizen of can not have any travel restrictions against traveling to that company, such as US to Cuba, Iran, Iraq, North Korea…
If your flying the a/c yourself, then you will also need to a FCC Radio Lincense , although this is never checked and enforeced…
